"Mark is the best!
He worked remotely with me on an extensive renovation/restoration of a 1930s era art deco style brick tutor.
He was able to quickly understand and respond to my design goals.
In addition to a complete set of approval drawings he shared a wealth of knowledge of materials, construction methods, negotiating with inspectors, building codes, ect

He came up with a design that included removal of the rear service entrance and basement stairwell thru kitchen, relocated stairwell and basement entry which nearly doubled the available floor space in kitchen.
Open floor plan of basement level by removal of supporting wall and designed header beam and support columns. It looks Awesome A total transformation!

kudos and thank you Mark"

"We hired Mark Shuler to design our weekend home on Lake Anna. In addition to wanting a beautiful home, it was important to us that the house feel like a retreat, that it visually complemented the natural surroundings, and was functional for entertaining guests.

The design process was a joy. Mark worked very closely with us to provide elegant solutions in all phases of the project. He not only designed an exterior that we love, but carefully planned the interior to meet and exceed all of requirements.

From helping us site the house to choosing hardware for the doors, Mark was detail oriented throughout and we now have a second home that we love."

"Mark Shuler worked with me on a very extensive house-lift, addition, and new foundation. It cost nearly as much as I paid for the house a few years earlier. His guidance was absolutely critical. He set me up with the excellent contractor I wound up using (STS Remodeling) and created a terrific design that had many smart features I would not have ever thought of. All the entrances are covered, for instance. We have 6' windows in the north-facing stairwell which bring in lots of light. And the lower level apartment he designed is stunning. We used an I-beam so we could have an open floor plan, with nine-foot ceilings and full-sized windows. You would never know it's a basement. It's nicer than the main level! Mark checked in on the project often while it was going on, whether I was there or not, and worked with the contractor directly, which was great. When we hit a big snag with drainage, he and the contractor worked on an affordable solution they then presented to me. I hope to do more projects with him soon -- he's already done some more designs for me, just need to find the $$ to execute them."

"I worked with Mark on a full renovation of my 1936 home. I am an experienced renovator and remodeler, and I had some pretty specific ideas of my own about what I wanted and what I didn't. Mark listened to all my points of view, and took the time to understand the 'why' behind my ideas and perspectives. Then, he added significant value in two ways.

First, he talked me out of a wall that I was dead-set on having between the kitchen and the living room. Every time I'm in either of those rooms - which is constantly! - I silently thank Mark for professionally, but insistently, pointing out to me that the entire flow of the house would be wonky if I put that wall there. He was right! I'm so glad I listened to him.

Second, he did considerable research to come up with a fireplace solution that, for complicated reasons that I won't go in to here, was a complex and one-off solution that no one I have worked with, before or since, had ever seen or heard of before. His doggedness in finding a fireplace solution that worked for my unique situation led to one of my favorite elements of my new house, and would not have been possible without his creativity and dedication to my project."

"Mark has done two significant remodel projects for me over the last 10 years, one was the conversion of a drab basement into a 3 bedroom, 1 bathroom, full kitchen, and living room mother in law unit which ended up being nicer than most houses I have seen, provided my teenage children with a "party space," provided us with significant capacity for overnight guests, and added value to our property. This project also involved significant engineering and an earthquake retrofit. The other project was another 1910's home in which we converted a run down 2nd floor bathroom into a luxury hotel type full bathroom, the conversion of a 1st floor closet to a parlor bathroom, and the miraculous transformation of a 1970's kitchen into a modern gourmet kitchen which opened into the dining room in a "great room" concept. That kitchen has elicited oohs and aahs from all visitors and is the jewel of the home. I had a vision for that project and having worked with Mark before I knew that he was just the person to see it with me, make it even better, and guide me and the contractors through its completion. Mark instantly saw the vision and quickly came up with plans that were even better than my concept. He also connected me to a wonderful team of contractors and designers who brought the project to completion on time and on budget. He stayed involved with the project at all stages and was always respectful not only of the vision but also of the finances. I have done many remodels as a homeowner and Mark is the best architect that I know."

"We used Mark for a project that was somewhat mandated for us, in a less than ideal circumstance, having nothing to do with Mark. So initially, we weren't very happy that we even needed his services, but it turned out to be a great experience. He was forthright, honest, diligent to make sure that all the bases were covered, and very practical in taking care of what needed to be addressed.
The project ended up costing less than we imagined and he was able to get us through the permitting process in a hassle-free way. It turned out to be a great experience meeting Mark and he helped point out some things to us that ended up benefitting us very much.
I highly recommend Mark and his company for any architectural needs - large or small."

"Mark helped us navigate the complexities of rules to build our ADU.
He was very personable, took initiative and resolved what seemed to be dead ends for us.
We used his design once the permits were approved and sailed through inspection.
Always helpful and knowledgeable, we highly recommend him."

"I have the highest regard for Mark Shuler as an architect. I sought Mark out to hire him to help renovate our home in 1998, after I had repeatedly run into incredibly beautiful homes in my neighborhood that he had both built and remodeled. Since that time he has worked on a number of different projects for me, and each time I am impressed with his integrity and creativity. He is an incredibly personable man who takes a great deal of time working with each client to make sure that the home he creates (or what he creates for a home) is exactly what the client desires AND will work well for their type of lifestyle. I have recommended him every time someone has asked for the name of an architect because I think so highly of Mark Shuler and the architectural work he does."

"Mark designed our new house and we love it. We wanted a new house for our growing family in Ballard, but were priced out of the market. Mark helped us identify a small lot and designed our house to maximize living area while not exceeding the lot's setbacks. It was a super tight site and got us swiftly through the permit process with very few comments. During construction, Mark frequently stopped by the job site on his own to check on the progress and help correct issues we completely missed. Very positive experience and we look forward to working with him again on the next house!"
